Where is the hiking in Florida?

The long one is the Florida National Scenic Trail, about 1,500 miles from Big Cypress National Preserve in the south to Gulf Islands National Seashore at the western end of the Panhandle.

It was designated in 1983, and it is one of eleven National Scenic Trails in the country and one of three that lie entirely within one state. Shorter trails include the CREW Marsh Trails in Collier County, the Turkey Creek Nature Trail in Okaloosa County, the Green Mountain trailhead and overlook in Lake County and the Santos trailhead in Marion County, and the state parks have their own.

Where to go from here.

01

CREW Marsh Trails

Collier County. CREW stands for the Corkscrew Regional Ecosystem Watershed, and the CREW Land and Water Trust looks after it. The point of the whole holding is water: this is watershed ground, and protecting it is a water decision as much as a wildlife one.

Turkey Creek Nature Trail

Okaloosa County. The Turkey Creek Nature Trail in Niceville is a boardwalk about a mile long that follows Turkey Creek through the woods, with platforms where people swim and put in canoes, kayaks and tubes to float the creek.

Green Mountain Scenic Overlook and Trailhead

Lake County. It opened in October 2014 and was joined to the Lake Apopka Loop Trail the following year. From the tower the view runs out over Lake Apopka, the fourth largest lake in Florida, and on a clear day the Orlando skyline stands up on the far side of it.

Santos Trailhead and Campground

Marion County. About twenty miles of singletrack run through the Santos and Vortex sections here, connecting to more than eighty further miles along the Greenway, and the Ocala Mountain Bike Association built and still maintains the network.
