ABOUT THIS PLACE

It is the only tropical zoo in the continental United States, and that single fact shapes the collection: animals that would need heated houses further north live outdoors here all year. The exhibits are moated rather than caged, so the animals are seen across water and planting instead of through bars. Around three thousand animals of some five hundred species are kept, and more than a million people come a year. The zoo began in 1948 as the Crandon Park Zoo on Key Biscayne, moved to this site in 1980 as Miami MetroZoo and took the present name in 2010. Five sections divide it: Florida Mission Everglades, Asia, Africa, Amazon and Beyond, which opened across twenty-seven acres in 2008, and Australia. The path around is four miles. Hurricane Andrew took down five thousand trees in 1992 and destroyed the Wings of Asia aviary, killing about a hundred of the three hundred birds in it. The monorail ran from 1984 until 2022
