ABOUT THIS PLACE
Two very different buildings stand on it. Richmond Cottage is a three-story wooden house of 1900 that began as a twenty-two room hotel, described in its day as the most southerly hotel on the mainland of the United States. The Stone House, finished in 1922 and designed by Phineas Paist, is a three-story Mediterranean building with concrete walls eighteen inches thick, built that way because Deering was afraid of fire and wanted his art collection to survive one. He lived here from 1922 until his death in 1927. The land matters as much as the houses: it holds what is believed to be the largest untouched coastal tropical hardwood hammock left in the continental United States, a Tequesta burial mound containing between twelve and eighteen burials, and a Pleistocene fossil site found in 1979.
