ABOUT THIS PLACE

Herzog and de Meuron designed it and the building is an argument about how to put a museum in the subtropics. Two hundred thousand square feet of usable space sits across three stories on a raised platform, with a wide perforated canopy reaching out past the walls to throw shade over open-air terraces where people gather without going inside. Tropical plants hang from the canopy. The parking garage is open-air and sits underneath the galleries, which lifts them clear of storm water. Glass on the first and third floors keeps the bay and the park visible from inside, while the second-floor galleries are more closed, with windows placed deliberately rather than continuously. A full-width staircase runs down to the bay walk. The interior volumes were designed so that walls and rooms can be added later without shutting the place, which for a young collection still being built is the practical part of the design
