Coral Castle Museum

Miami-Dade County · South Florida & the Keys

A stone garden at 28655 South Dixie Highway, Homestead, carved by one man working alone over twenty-eight years.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Edward Leedskalnin was a Latvian immigrant with no training in building of any kind. Between 1923 and 1951 he quarried, cut and set more than eleven hundred tons of oolitic limestone using tools he made himself out of scrapped car parts, and he called the place Rock Gate. He worked at night and nobody ever watched him do it, which is the reason the site has attracted as much speculation as admiration; Leedskalnin himself said he knew the secrets used to build the pyramids, and left it there. The arrangement of the stones has astronomical elements in it, including a working sundial and a Polaris telescope, alongside furniture, a throne and a table cut in the shape of Florida. The gate stone is so finely balanced that it turns with one hand. It opens daily from nine in the morning until eight at night, with guided tours on the hour. The number is 305-248-6345
