ABOUT THIS PLACE
The Jefferson County Historical Association was chartered in 1962 to keep the county's history, and it has been at it for more than sixty years. In 1964 it bought the Wirick-Simmons House, which was then neglected, and made it both headquarters and museum. The house itself is the first exhibit: a Greek Revival antebellum building put up in 1831, on the National Register of Historic Places since 1972, and recognized by the Historic American Buildings Survey for the standard of its preservation. Inside are records and objects of historic interest given up by families in the community, along with oral histories the association has gathered and written family records that genealogists come a long way to work through. The museum opens by appointment rather than on fixed hours, and a personalized tour can be arranged on request. The number is 850-997-1980.
