ABOUT THIS PLACE

Mound 1 stands about forty-nine feet high. It was raised in three stages, beginning some time after the late third or early fourth century, by people of the Swift Creek and then the Weeden Island cultures who built and lived on this site between roughly the years 200 and 900. Almost all of the identifiable artifacts recovered here date from the Weeden Island period. A paved walking path leads to an elevated viewing platform, and visitors stay on that rather than on the mound itself, because feet wear the earth away faster than centuries of rain do. An interpretive pavilion carries panels, audio narration and a tactile replica of the mound for anyone who cannot see it. The state bought the ground in two pieces, 81.198 acres on June 30, 1992, and 109.138 acres on August 29, 2005. The park opens daily from eight in the morning until sundown, and entry is three dollars a vehicle paid into an honor box
