WILDLIFE & CONSERVATION
Aucilla Wildlife Management Area
Jefferson County · Panhandle & Emerald Coast
50,549 acres across Jefferson and Taylor counties, about twelve miles southeast of Tallahassee.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission manages it. Two rivers run through, and they could not be less alike. The Aucilla is dark water threading past karst formations, with sinks where the river drops underground and comes back up again, and it is the harder paddle of the two. The Wacissa is clear and spring-fed, used for tubing and for easy drifting. The ground between them is hydric hammock, mesic flatwoods, upland forest and spring-run river. Florida black bears live here, along with bobcats, river otters and white-tailed deer, and the reptiles include eastern diamondback rattlesnakes, gopher tortoises and alligators. The area is a listed site on the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail. The Aucilla Sinks Trail and a stretch of the Florida National Scenic Trail take walkers through the karst. Goose Pasture Campground takes campers first come, first served. The sloughs hold largemouth bass, Suwannee bass and bream, and turkey, deer and hog are hunted in season
