Flagler Beach Municipal Pier
Flagler County · Atlantic Coast
The 1928 wooden pier was finished off by Hurricane Ian in 2022; a concrete replacement 800 feet long is being built in its place.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
The Flagler Beach pier opened in 1928, three years after the town was incorporated, as an 800-foot wooden structure. It became the center of the place: people fished from it, met on it, and the businesses along the seafront lived off the traffic it brought. Over 94 years seven storms took pieces of it. A nor'easter in 1944 took about half. Another in 1984 took roughly 432 feet and left the pier permanently shorter, at about 600. Hurricane Matthew tore off 160 feet in 2016, and in 2022 hurricanes Ian and Nicole damaged it past repair. In 2021 the city had already voted to replace the wood with concrete. The new pier is being built back to the original 800 feet, with the deck 28 feet up, more than ten feet higher than the old one, and engineered for 135-mile-an-hour winds. Cost runs between 14.1 and 16 million dollars, about two thirds of it from FEMA. The first 100 feet of the 1928 pier is being kept and built into the new structure. Construction started in July 2025, demolition in January 2026, and by June 2026 the work was 60 percent done, with completion expected in February 2027
