Bulow Creek State Park

Flagler County · Atlantic Coast

The last real stretch of ancient hammock on Florida's Atlantic coast, and the Fairchild Oak, thought to be over 2,000 years old.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Bulow Creek State Park protects Bulow Hammock, described as the last significant strip of ancient hammock left along Florida's Atlantic coast, north of Ormond Beach off Old Dixie Highway. The Fairchild Oak is what most people come to see. It would take at least eight people holding hands to reach around the trunk, botanists put its age past 2,000 years, and its lower limbs curve out and down until they run into the ground and rest there. The rest of the park lives up to it: old-growth forest, freshwater springs, swamp where leather ferns grow taller than a person, and coastal floodplain full of cabbage palms. Three trailheads open onto about 6.8 miles of yellow-blazed trail. The Wahlin Trail is a 0.4-mile interpretive walk, the Boardman Pond path is 0.7 miles out and back and suits birdwatchers, and the Bulow Woods Loop runs 5.2 miles through swamp and hammock, connecting this park with the Bulow Plantation ruins. There are restrooms, picnic tables and several parking areas. The park opens at 8 in the morning and closes at sunset, there is no entrance charge, and leashed dogs and bicycles are both welcome
