Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park

Baker County · North Florida & First Coast

The ground where Florida's largest Civil War battle was fought on February 20, 1864, and the first historic site the state ever set aside.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

More than 10,000 cavalry, infantry and artillery troops met here on the afternoon of February 20, 1864, in open pine woods east of Lake City. The fighting lasted about five hours and produced 2,807 casualties. Union forces withdrew toward Jacksonville, and the interior of the state stayed under Confederate control for the remaining fourteen months of the war. Three regiments of United States Colored Troops fought in the battle, among them the 54th Massachusetts, and their part in it is a large share of why the field is remembered. In 1912 Florida made this its first historic site, at a time when veterans of the battle were still living and still coming back for reunions. A monument raised by the United Daughters of the Confederacy was dedicated here that October. The state owns just over three acres outright and manages another 688 under permit. A mile-long trail carries visitors across the field with interpretive signs marking what happened where. The park is at 5815 Battlefield Trail Road in Sanderson, open daily from nine to five. The museum closed on July 16, 2026. Reenactors gather every February over Presidents Day weekend
