Heritage Park Village

Baker County · North Florida & First Coast

A village of rebuilt Baker County storefronts, from a Rexall drugstore to a turpentine distillery, unlocked by a docent if you telephone ahead.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Heritage Park Village is a collection of historic buildings in Macclenny put together to tell the history of Baker County. It is laid out as a village of storefronts rather than as a single museum, and what is inside them is specific: a Rexall drugstore, the Blue Haven Restaurant, the Northeast Florida Telephone Company, the Davis Oil and Gas Company, a Moonshine Garage and car museum, a grocery, a turpentine distillery, a hat shop, a pharmacy, a fabric store, the Darbyville Jail, a railroad depot with a caboose, a fire truck, a barber shop and a family chapel. There is a pickin' shed for musicians. The oldest structure is a blockhouse fort, built in 1837 by James Burnsed out of squared yellow pine logs joined at the corners with full dovetails, with high windows, hinged shutters and openings cut for rifle fire, put up to shelter settlers from Seminole raids. It stood north of Sanderson before it was moved here, families lived in it into the 1960s, and it went on the National Register of Historic Places on May 7, 1973. It stands at 102 South Lowder Street, and you need to telephone ahead so a docent knows to come and unlock each store
