WATER & COAST
Melbourne Beach
Brevard County · Atlantic Coast
The town beach where a permit gets you a fire in a designated pit, but only outside turtle nesting season.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
Melbourne Beach is a small town beach, and the thing that sets it apart from the rest of this coast is that fires are allowed on it. Recreational beach fires are permitted daily in designated fire pits between 5 p.m. and 11 p.m., but only with a permit issued by the town, and permits go first come, first served. They are available only in the non-nesting months from November to February, because this is the stretch of coast where the sea turtles come ashore. Melbourne Beach is the oldest beach community in Brevard County and its center is Ryckman Park on Ocean Avenue, which holds the municipal building, a community center, a playground and the Melbourne Beach Pier. The Ryckman House of 1890 stands there, one of the first homes built in the town, Florida Vernacular in style and held by G. E. Ryckman's family for seventy years, along with a reproduction of the Beaujean home that served as the first post office. The Villa Marine Hotel of 1912 and the Community Chapel are close by
