Florida has places to stay 22 feet under the water, on a houseboat, in a treehouse or a covered wagon, in a hotel shaped like a guitar, and overnight at a space center, an aquarium and a zoo.
The Where to Stay page lists them, each with a link to its own website or listing.
Jules' Undersea Lab in Key Largo is a room 22 feet beneath the surface. You scuba dive down and come up inside through an opening in the floor. Everyone needs at least an Open Water scuba certification, and no more than four people stay at a time.
On the water, the Flamingo houseboats in Everglades National Park each sleep up to 6; the renter must be 25 or older, there is a two-night minimum, and every driver needs a boater education card. In the trees, Treehouse Point at Camp Chowenwaw, a Clay County park in Green Cove Springs, has nine screened treehouses with four bunks each, no electricity in the treehouses and a shared bathhouse. Rooterville in Melrose rents an 1880s-style covered wagon with heat, air conditioning and its own bathroom.
Among the hotels built around a theme, The Guitar Hotel at Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood is a tower shaped like a guitar, 450 feet tall, with 638 rooms and suites, and B Ocean Resort in Fort Lauderdale is shaped like a big ship, with mermaid shows in its Wreck Bar in the evenings.
For groups, Kennedy Space Center has students ages 7 to 14 spend the night under Space Shuttle Atlantis or at the Apollo/Saturn V Center. The Florida Aquarium in Tampa holds sleepovers for groups of 15 to 80, from 7 p.m. to 9:30 the next morning, for children 8 or older. At Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, groups of 15 or more, ages 7 and up, sleep on the floor at the Land of the Tiger or the Range of the Jaguar Lost Temple.
Where to Stay also lists Stay Ombi's floating bungalows, Little Palm Island, Sunset Key Cottages, Bahia Honda State Park's cabins, the Treehouse Villas at Saratoga Springs, Westgate River Ranch, the LEGOLAND Florida hotels, Universal's and Disney's themed hotels, themed vacation homes, Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge, and sleepovers at SeaWorld Orlando and Brevard Zoo.
Check dates, ages and rules on each place's own website before you plan around it. 1stFlorida does not take reservations.
