For people from Ontario the main change is health coverage: OHIP requires that you be physically in Ontario for 153 days in any 12-month period.
OHIP also requires that Ontario be your primary residence. Someone outside Ontario for more than 212 days in any 12-month period may have to reapply in person at a ServiceOntario center. If you plan to be outside Canada for more than 7 months in any 12-month period, you can keep coverage for up to 2 years if your health card is valid, Ontario stays your primary home, and you were in Ontario at least 153 days in each of the two 12-month periods immediately before you leave. Before going, you bring the card and proof of residency, such as a lease or property tax bill, to a ServiceOntario center. ServiceOntario INFOline: 1-866-532-3161.
OHIP's emergency coverage outside Canada is for an illness, condition or injury that is acute and unexpected and requires immediate treatment. For inpatient care it pays up to $400 Canadian a day in an operating room, a coronary or intensive care unit, or a neonatal or pediatric special care unit, and up to $200 a day for lower levels of care. For outpatient care it pays the lesser of up to $50 a day or the hospital's bill. Doctors are paid the lesser of their bill or the Ontario Schedule of Benefits rate. Ontario recommends buying private health insurance before leaving to cover services OHIP does not. Claims go in on the Out of Province/Country Claims Submission form, with original receipts.
Ontario's 2026 income tax, in the Canada Revenue Agency's table, is 5.05 percent on the first $53,891 of taxable income, 9.15 percent up to $107,785, 11.16 percent up to $150,000, 12.16 percent up to $220,000 and 13.16 percent above $220,000, in addition to federal tax. The CRA says the provincial rate is determined by your province of residence on December 31, and that the return for the year you leave Canada uses the tax package of the province you lived in on the date you left. CRA: 1-800-959-8281 from Canada and the U.S.
Florida law lets a nonresident who is at least 16 and has a valid noncommercial license from his or her home state or country drive here, and a nonresident's car needs no Florida registration while the owner follows the home registration law and displays its registration number. That ends when you take a job in Florida or enroll children in a Florida public school: the law then gives 30 days to get a Florida driver license and 10 days to register the car.
If your Ontario license expires while you are out of the province, you can ask for a temporary license valid for up to 6 months, as long as it has not been expired for over one year, canceled or suspended. G1, G2 and M2 holders cannot get one mailed and have to visit a DriveTest center to reapply when they return. ServiceOntario: 1-800-387-3445 toll-free in North America outside Toronto, 416-235-2999 in the Toronto area.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection lists three Detroit crossings: the Ambassador Bridge, the Windsor Tunnel and the Gordie Howe International Bridge, which opened to traffic on July 27, 2026, and connects Highway 401 in Ontario with Interstate 75 in Detroit. Port Huron has the Bluewater Bridge, and Buffalo and Niagara Falls have the Peace, Rainbow, Lewiston and Whirlpool bridges. CBP posts the wait at each one at bwt.cbp.gov.
