What does a county tax collector do in Florida?

A Florida county tax collector mails property tax bills, collects the payments and sends the money to the county, cities, schools and other taxing bodies.

Property tax bills generally go out in November. Paying early earns a discount of 4 percent in November, 3 percent in December, 2 percent in January and 1 percent in February. Taxes still unpaid on April 1 become delinquent, and tax certificates are sold on unpaid taxes by June 1. The tax collector also takes applications to pay in quarterly installments, due before May 1, and for homestead tax deferral, due March 31. The tax collector does not set the value of your property or the tax rate. The property appraiser sets the value, and local boards set the rates.

Florida law makes county tax collectors the state's agents for vehicle registrations and license plates. In Brevard County, the Tax Collector also titles and registers vehicles, mobile homes and boats for the state, issues driver licenses, ID cards, birth certificates, and hunting and fishing licenses, handles local business tax, and takes concealed weapon license applications. It has offices in Titusville, Merritt Island, Viera, Melbourne and Palm Bay. Call 321-264-6969 in north Brevard or 321-633-2199 in south Brevard.

Services and branch offices differ by county, so check your own county tax collector's website before you go.

How much are property taxes in Florida?

There is no single Florida rate. Your bill is the home's assessed value, minus any exemptions, times the millage rates set each year by the county, the city if you live in one, the school board and any special districts, so two houses of the same price in neighboring towns can pay different amounts.
