How do I compare car insurance prices in Florida, and what does the state require?

The price depends on who is covered, the vehicle, the coverage and the county, so Florida's insurance office shows sample rates by county, not one price.

The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation is the state agency that approves insurance companies' rate filings. Its CHOICES rate comparison, at choices.floir.gov, lists sample average rates by company for any Florida county, for three sample households: a senior married couple, a single woman, and a family with young drivers. The rates are examples only, so confirm any rate with the company. The Office can be reached at (850) 413-3140. On March 5, 2026, it reported that Florida's five largest auto insurance groups were indicating an average rate decrease of 8% for 2026.

Florida law requires at least $10,000 in personal injury protection (PIP) and $10,000 in property damage liability (PDL), and proof of both before a car can be registered. The policy must come from a company licensed in Florida, and coverage must stay in force even when the car is not driven. If it lapses, the driver license and plate can be suspended for up to three years, with a reinstatement fee of up to $500. New residents can ask their agent to convert their policy to a Florida policy.

Bodily injury liability, uninsured motorist, medical payments, collision and comprehensive coverage can be added to the minimum. To compare prices, ask several licensed companies or agents to quote the same coverages and limits.

For insurance questions or complaints, the Florida Department of Financial Services helpline is 1-877-693-5236 (1-877-MY-FL-CFO), 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time, Monday through Friday; from outside Florida, call (850) 413-3089.
