Washington County · Panhandle & Emerald Coast
Chipley's community theater, staging plays and musicals in the historic Chipley High School Auditorium.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
Ann Jensen, Howard Pelham, Mickey Balaban and Ralph Nolan founded the company in the fall of 1962. It ran for seven years, putting on Southern Exposure, Carousel and The Sound of Music among others, and closed in the fall of 1968. It stayed closed for nearly forty years. Kevin Russell brought it back in 2006, and the company staged Steel Magnolias in 2008. In July of that year it took over the lease of the old high school auditorium and spent until April 2009 renovating it, then opened the restored house with A Stroll Down Broadway, the first musical the playhouse had produced in more than four decades. It is a registered nonprofit organization at 680 Second Street in Chipley, and the telephone number for the box office is 850-638-9113. Seasons are announced ahead and seats are sold locally rather than through a ticket agency. For a county this size, keeping a working theater company going is not a small thing, and the productions are cast and built locally
