WATER & COAST

Cypress Springs

Washington County · Panhandle & Emerald Coast

A second-magnitude spring on Holmes Creek near Vernon, reachable only from the water.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

It puts out about 65.3 million gallons a day. The basin drops to roughly seventy-five feet at the vent and holds about twenty-five feet around the rim, and the water is clear enough that from a boat you can watch the sand move at the bottom. The land around it has been owned by the Nestle Water Company since 2002, so there is no road in and no parking lot: the only way to reach it is by kayak, canoe, paddleboard or small boat. Launch at Cotton Landing or Culpepper Landing on Holmes Creek and paddle about half a mile up Cypress Spring Run to the basin. Wooden platforms and picnic tables sit at the spring, and a rope swing hangs from a tree over the water. Swimming, snorkeling and diving are all done here. Cypress Springs Adventures, a local outfitter, rents boats and runs the shuttle for people who do not have their own. It is about an hour and a half east of Pensacola
