ABOUT THIS PLACE

The falls drop seventy-three feet into a sinkhole a hundred feet deep, and then the water is gone. It disappears into a cavern at the bottom of the sink and nobody has traced where it goes from there. That is the thing people remember about this park: not the height of the fall, but the fact that the creek simply ends. A paved trail and a boardwalk lead down to viewing platforms around the rim, so the walk is short and manageable for most people. A two-acre lake nearby is open for swimming and fishing. The campground has twenty-four sites with electricity and fresh water, picnic tables, grills and clotheslines. The history under this ground is odd as well. The first oil well ever drilled in Florida went down here in 1919, reached 4,912 feet, found nothing worth selling and was capped in 1921. A gristmill powered by the falls worked during the Civil War, and a distillery was built on the site in 1891. The land was deeded to the state in 1962
