FLORIDA PLACE TO EXPLORE

Steinhatchee Falls

Taylor County · North Florida & First Coast

The widest waterfall in Florida, on the Steinhatchee River about eight miles above its mouth.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Wide is the word, not tall. The tannic river has cut across a shelf of coastal limestone, and the drop is four to five feet when the water is low and almost invisible when the water is high, so paddlers sometimes glide over the ledge without noticing it. The Suwannee River Water Management District holds the 1,766-acre tract and can be reached at 386-362-1001. Getting there means a dirt road off State Road 51 near Tennille, about two miles south of the junction with US 19 and US 27. Near the water you can see wagon ruts cut into the bare limestone by the Old Bellamy Road, the pioneer route that carried settlers across north Florida in the 1800s, with matching tracks on the far bank where the wagons came out. Facilities are plain: picnic tables, a portable toilet, and a canoe launch. A half-mile loop trail explores the ground upstream, and a separate trail of 3.3 miles runs out to State Road 51. Paddlers who put in below the falls get an eight-mile run down to the town of Steinhatchee with a few stretches of easy rapids. Leashed dogs are welcome
