FLORIDA PLACE TO EXPLORE
Colonial Quarter
St. Johns County · Atlantic Coast
Two acres of living history on St. George Street showing St. Augustine as it stood in the 1740s, with a watchtower to climb.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
The Colonial Quarter takes up two acres in the middle of the historic district, off St. George Street, and it is the closest thing in the city to walking into the eighteenth century. The site shows life under Spanish rule in the 1740s: interpreters in period dress work a blacksmith's forge, build a ship the way it would have been built then, fire a musket and explain what the work involved. A wooden watchtower stands in the middle of the site and visitors climb it for a view over the old town. The University of Florida owns the property. Pat Croce, who also runs the Pirate and Treasure Museum nearby, reopened it as Colonial Quarter LLC on March 16, 2013, after a three-month renovation. The site doubles as a music venue in the evenings, with an outdoor stage and lantern-lit seating, and two restaurants operate inside it, so the place carries on well after the interpreters have gone home
