ABOUT THIS PLACE

Henry Flagler made his money at Standard Oil and spent a good deal of it on Florida. The Hotel Ponce de Leon opened on January 10, 1888, as the grandest winter resort in the state, designed by the New York firm Carrere and Hastings as their first major commission. It was built of poured concrete using local coquina as the aggregate, an unusual method at the time, and it was one of the first buildings in the country wired for electricity from the start, with power from Thomas Edison's own generators. Louis Comfort Tiffany's company made the stained glass for the dining room, and George W. Maynard painted the murals. The hotel closed in 1967 and Flagler College opened in the building in 1968. Students eat under the Tiffany windows every day. It went on the National Register in 1975 and became a National Historic Landmark on February 21, 2006. Guided tours have run since 1998
