West Florida Railroad Museum
Santa Rosa County · Panhandle & Emerald Coast
A railroad museum in Milton's 1909 Louisville and Nashville depot, with cabooses and rolling stock standing on the track outside.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
The depot at 5003 Henry Street was built in 1909, replacing the Pensacola and Atlantic depot of 1882 that had burned down two years earlier. The Santa Rosa Historical Society owns it now, and the West Florida Railroad Museum opened inside it in 1989. The building went on the National Register of Historic Places on October 29, 1982, and appears in A Guide to Florida's Historic Architecture. The collection stands mostly outdoors on the rails: dining cars, sleeper cars converted to baggage and dormitory use, two cabooses, a boxcar and a flatcar, along with a bridge tender's house moved here from the Escambia Bay trestle and a section shed with a motor car in it. Inside are exhibits on the railroads that built this part of the Panhandle, when timber and turpentine moved by rail. Two model railroad clubs work out of the museum, one indoors and one running a garden railway outside
