Blackwater Heritage State Trail

Santa Rosa County · Panhandle & Emerald Coast

An 8.1-mile paved rail trail running north out of Milton, with a military spur carrying on to Whiting Field.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The trail follows an abandoned railroad line for 8.1 miles, paved in asphalt and open all year to walkers, runners, cyclists and horses on the parallel track. The idea came out of a public meeting in Milton in February 1990, where more than 500 people turned out in favor of turning the corridor into a recreational trail, and after the state and federal agencies worked through the land it opened on February 20, 1999. It runs north from downtown Milton through pine woods, wetland and open country, crossing creeks on the old railroad bridges. At the northern end the Military Heritage Trail carries on another mile and a half onto Naval Air Station Whiting Field, managed by the base, which makes this one of the few rail trails in the country that ends on an active military installation. It is part of the Florida Greenways and Trails System and is flat, shaded in stretches, and quiet on weekdays
