Gulf Breeze Zoo

Santa Rosa County · Panhandle & Emerald Coast

Fifty acres at Woodlawn Beach holding over 900 animals, with a train through a thirty-acre preserve where the animals roam loose.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Four local businessmen opened this in 1984 as The Zoo Northwest Florida, with about 60 animals on 19 acres. It passed to nonprofit ownership in 2004, ran into trouble, closed in August 2009 and was shut for a period before people from Virginia Safari Park bought it, rebuilt it and reopened it on February 18, 2010, under the present name. It now covers 50 acres between Gulf Breeze and Navarre: twenty acres of walk-through exhibits and thirty acres of open preserve. More than 900 animals live here, among them rhinoceros, hippopotamus, western lowland gorillas, orangutans, lions, tigers, bears, giraffes and lemurs. A Huntington locomotive train runs a guided circuit of about twenty minutes through the preserve, where antelope, rhinoceros and other animals move loose around it. Giraffes, goats and others can be fed by hand. The zoo's first white rhinoceros calf was born on January 20, 2018, 34 years in
