QUESTIONS THAT NAME THIS PLACE

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Lake Toho, as everyone calls it, covers 22,700 acres and runs 42 miles around. The name is Seminole: tohopke means fence or fort and likv means site, so it is the site of the fort. It sits at the head of the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes. Shingle Creek feeds it from the north, the three-mile St. Cloud Canal links it east to East Lake Tohopekaliga, and the four-mile South Port canal carries the water south to Cypress Lake and on toward Lake Okeechobee. Two islands sit in it, Makinson and one other. The lake is known nationally for largemouth bass, and tournaments run on it through the year, with guide boats leaving from Kissimmee and Southport most mornings. It is also good for birds: herons, egrets, osprey, eagles and wintering waterfowl, along with alligators and turtles that anyone walking the shoreline will see. Kissimmee Lakefront Park at the north end gives public access, with paths, a boat ramp and piers
