ABOUT THIS PLACE

Saint Clair Whitman spent his life on Cedar Key gathering seashells and native artifacts, and did it well enough that National Geographic took notice of him. The collection he built is the core of this museum. Charles Kuhn designed the building in 1961 and it is a clear piece of mid-century work in its own right, with handmade dioramas and hand-lettered maps inside that are worth looking at for the craft as much as the content. The displays run from prehistoric times through the early 1900s and cover the people who lived on these islands and the timber industry that followed them. Whitman's own house, built in the 1880s and bought by him in the 1920s, was moved onto the grounds in 1991 and furnished as it would have been between 1920 and 1930. A brick path called the Memory Walk joins the house to the museum, and a short nature trail runs through the native growth behind. John Muir walked to Cedar Key in 1867 and a marker set here in 1983 records it. Open Friday to Sunday, ten until five
