Devil’s Den Prehistoric Spring

Levy County · Gulf Coast

An underground spring inside a collapsed cave at 5390 Northeast 180th Avenue, Williston, reached by going down a staircase through a hole in the ground.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The roof of a limestone cavern fell in long ago and left an opening at the surface with clear water about a hundred and twenty feet across below it. Light comes down through that opening and that is what people photograph. The water holds at seventy-two degrees the whole year round, so it is warm in January and cold in July. Fossils of Pleistocene animals have been recovered from the bottom, which is where the prehistoric part of the name comes from. This is not a swimming hole: snorkeling and scuba only, with a reservation required for snorkeling, and no sunscreen is permitted because of the fish and turtles living in the water. Anyone under eighteen needs a parent present or a notarized consent form. Divers have to be out of the water ninety minutes before closing. The gate is open eight until five daily, closed Christmas Day with shorter hours on Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve. There is a campground on site with tent and recreational vehicle sites and cabins sleeping four
