Cedar Key Historical Society Museum

Levy County · Gulf Coast

Two historic buildings at 609 Second Street on State Road 24, holding the town's own record of itself.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The Cedar Key Historical Society was formed in 1977 and the museum it runs occupies the Lutterloh House, with the Andrews House beside it as an annex. The Andrews House has a history of its own: it stood on Atsena Otie Key, the island where the original settlement was, and was moved across to the mainland after the hurricane of 1896 destroyed the community there. That storm is the dividing line in Cedar Key's history and the reason the town sits where it does now. Inside are exhibits and photographs covering the place from prehistoric times through the twentieth century, the shell mound builders, the cedar mills, the sponging and fishing, and the families who stayed. The whole area is part of the Cedar Keys Historic and Archaeological District. Hurricane Helene did serious damage in 2024 and the society has been repairing the buildings and rebuilding exhibits since, so telephone or check before making a special trip
