Lake Jackson Mounds Archaeological State Park

Leon County · Panhandle & Emerald Coast

The ceremonial center of a Fort Walton culture town occupied from about 1050 to 1500, on the south shore of Lake Jackson.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Seven earthwork mounds were raised here. Six of them are inside the park. Mound 2 is the largest, thirty-six feet high and roughly two hundred and seventy by three hundred and twelve feet at the base, and it was built in stages by carrying baskets of earth. The people who lived here were part of the wider Mississippian world, and the copper breastplates, embossed plaques and shell ornaments recovered from Mound 3 in a salvage excavation in 1975 and 1976 show trade reaching a long way inland. Twenty-four burials came out of that work. The settlement covered some forty-seven acres. The state bought the first eleven and a half acres in 1966 and has added to it since, and the site went on the National Register of Historic Places on May 6, 1971. A nature trail of a little over two miles runs down through hardwood ravines past the remains of an 1800s grist mill. Open daily eight until sundown, paid into an honor box
