Veterans Memorial Park Pensacola

Escambia County · Panhandle & Emerald Coast

The Wall South, a half-scale permanent copy of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial carrying more than 58,000 names, on the downtown bayfront.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Veterans Memorial Park sits on the downtown Pensacola bayfront at 200 South 10th Avenue, next to Admiral Mason Park along Bayfront Parkway. The ground was once a rough waterfront district called Hawkshaw, left over from the lumber years. In 1989 the Vietnam Veterans of Northwest Florida saw the traveling exhibit known as The Moving Wall and decided the area should have something permanent. What they built was dedicated on October 24, 1992, and is called the Wall South: the first permanent replica of the National Vietnam Veterans Memorial anywhere, built at half the scale of the original in Washington and carrying the same list of more than 58,000 names cut into the stone. The city of Pensacola owns the park. A nonprofit foundation with a ten-member volunteer board of retired officers, business people and veterans looks after it under a license agreement with the city. Other monuments stand around the wall. It is an open park on a public waterfront rather than a gated site, so people walk through it at all hours, and it is worth seeing at either end of the day
