Ponce de Leon Park

Charlotte County · Gulf Coast

A city park at 3400 Ponce de Leon Parkway on Charlotte Harbor, known for its sunsets.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The beach here was made to open up the waterfront, and the view west across the harbor is why people come at the end of the day. An interpretive boardwalk loops about half a mile through mangrove forest, with signs explaining what white, red and black mangroves each do and why they matter to the harbor, and a fishing and observation platform stands along it. The Peace River Wildlife Center is inside the park, a volunteer-run bird rescue and rehabilitation operation, generally open from eleven in the morning until four and closed on holidays. Several small statues of Juan Ponce de Leon are set about the grounds, marking his arrival on this coast in 1513; they are modest rather than monumental. There is a playground, a picnic area looking over the water, restrooms, a fishing pier and a boat ramp. The birding is good and paddling is easy from the ramp. The park opens sunrise to sunset and there is no charge
