Peace River Wildlife Center

Charlotte County · Gulf Coast

A nonprofit wildlife hospital and education center on the Charlotte Harbor shoreline, where the permanent residents can be visited.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Peace River Wildlife Center is a nonprofit wildlife rescue, rehabilitation and education organization on the shoreline of Charlotte Harbor at Punta Gorda. Animals that can be returned to the wild are, and the ones that cannot stay on as permanent residents that visitors can see. Among those shown on its own listings are a leucistic eastern screech owl, a great horned owl, a crested caracara, an American kestrel, a barred owl and pelicans. The education center and gift shop are at 3400 Ponce de Leon Parkway. The wildlife hospital itself works from a separate address on Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard and is not the part the public visits. The education center sits inside Ponce de Leon Park, so a visit takes in the mangrove boardwalk and the harbor beach as well. Opening is generally from eleven in the morning until four, closed on holidays, and the work is done by volunteers rather than paid staff. The permanent residents are there because an injury left them unable to hunt, fly or feed themselves in the wild, so each bird on show is one that would otherwise have been put down
