WATER & COAST
Black Rock Beach at Big Talbot Island
Duval County · North Florida & First Coast
Reached by a half-mile trail through hammock forest and coastal scrub, and best visited at low tide. The black formations are not rock at all - they are spodosol, soft and formed out of soil, eroded into shapes that look volcanic. Bleached driftwood trees lie where they fell from the bluff, and they are protected, so nothing is taken home. Parking is limited to fifteen cars and paid by scanning a code, with an overflow area about a mile north. No dogs on this beach.
