How do tolls work in Florida? Do I need a SunPass?

You do not need one, but it costs less. Many of Florida's toll roads are moving to all-electronic tolling, with no cash.

Where no transponder is read, a camera photographs the license plate, and a Toll-By-Plate invoice is mailed to the car's registered owner for each 30 days of tolls, plus a $2.50 administrative fee on each invoice. SunPass customers pay the lowest toll rate, on average 25 percent less than Toll-By-Plate. There are two SunPass transponders. The SunPass Mini is a sticker that stays on one windshield and costs $4.99 plus tax. The SunPass PRO moves from car to car, works on a motorcycle and also works in the states that take E-ZPass, and costs $14.95 plus tax. Both are sold online, by phone at 1-888-865-5352 and at stores such as Publix, CVS and Walgreens, and a new transponder starts with a first payment of at least $10 toward tolls. Most Florida toll roads and bridges also take E-PASS, LeeWay, E-ZPass, Peach Pass and NC Quick Pass. Keep only one transponder in the car, or a toll can be charged twice. In a rental car, add the rental's plate to your SunPass account; otherwise the rental company collects the tolls with the fees in your rental agreement.
