How do tolls work in Florida? Do I need a SunPass?
You do not need one, but it costs less. Many of Florida's toll roads are moving to all-electronic tolling, with no cash.

I-4 links Tampa, Orlando and the Daytona Beach area, and FL511, the state's free traffic service, shows its traffic, crashes and construction live.
I-4 runs from Tampa on the Gulf Coast, through Orlando's theme park area, to the Daytona Beach area. It meets I-75, Florida's Turnpike and I-95.
The Florida Department of Transportation finished the I-4 Ultimate project in February 2022, after seven years of construction, at a cost of $2.4 billion. It rebuilt 21 miles of I-4 through Orange and Seminole counties, from west of Kirkman Road to east of State Road 434, and added I-4 Express, two tolled lanes in each direction.
Work continues on both sides of that section. In April 2025 the department finished one more lane in each direction for more than 6 miles, from U.S. 27 in Polk County to World Drive in Osceola County. It is planning more along the 14 miles from U.S. 27 to State Road 536, including two express lanes and one more regular lane in each direction. Two more sections are being designed. One is 5.7 miles from Osceola Parkway at the Osceola-Orange county line, part of the work the department calls I-4 Beyond the Ultimate, with construction estimated at $515 million. The other is about 9 miles from State Road 434 to U.S. 17-92 at the Seminole-Volusia county line, and it is not yet funded for construction.
FL511 is run by the department. It shows congestion, crashes, construction, travel times updated every few minutes and traffic cameras, at fl511.com and in an app for Apple and Android phones. To report a crash, call *FHP (*347) to reach the Florida Highway Patrol, or 911 in an emergency. The department's main number is (850) 414-4100, and project news is at MovingI4Forward.com.
