In the National Hurricane Center's long-term count of hurricane strikes on the mainland coast by state, Florida has more than any other state, ahead of Texas and Louisiana. It also has the most major hurricanes, Category 3 and stronger. The Hurricane Center is part of NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
The Hurricane Center uses a measure called the "return period": how often, on average, a hurricane can be expected to pass within 50 nautical miles of a given place. NOAA says South Florida, coastal North Carolina and southeast Louisiana have the most frequent return periods in the country. For major hurricanes, the return period is longer. A 20-year return period for a major hurricane, for example, means that about five of them passed within 50 nautical miles of that place in the past 100 years.
Not every year brings one. In 2025, the Atlantic had 13 named storms, 5 hurricanes and 4 major hurricanes, and no hurricane made landfall in Florida or anywhere else in the continental United States. NOAA said it was the first time since 2015 that no hurricane made landfall in the continental U.S.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. By the long-term average, its peak is September 10.
