Sopchoppy Depot Park and Museum

Wakulla County · Panhandle & Emerald Coast

The restored railroad depot in Sopchoppy, with a museum inside and a park around it.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Sopchoppy is a town of a few hundred people on the edge of the Apalachicola National Forest, and the depot is the reason there is a town. The building has been kept and turned into a small museum of local history, with the park laid out around it for the community to use. Once a year the place fills up. The Worm Gruntin' Festival is held at Depot Park every April, and it is built around a real occupation. Worm grunting means driving a wooden stake into the ground and rubbing a flat iron across the head of it, which sends a vibration through the soil that the earthworms read as a mole digging toward them. They come to the surface, and the grunter picks them up and sells them as fishing bait. People have made a living at it in these woods for generations. The festival has a worm grunting contest, a parade, music and food, and it elects a Worm Gruntin' Queen
