ABOUT THIS PLACE

The whole river is spring-fed, so it runs clear and cold and at a steady level rather than rising and falling with the rain like a blackwater river. It joins the St. Marks about three miles above the Gulf, at the old fort. The marked canoe trail covers roughly four miles between the Upper Bridge, where County Road 365 crosses, and the Lower Bridge at US 98. That stretch is easy water with no rapids and a gentle current, which makes it a sensible first paddle for someone who has never been in a kayak. Manatees come up the river in the cooler months and are protected here, so boat speeds are held down. Alligators, turtles, herons and limpkins are common along the banks. The water is clear enough that Hollywood used it for underwater filming: the Tarzan pictures and Creature from the Black Lagoon were both shot on this river and at the spring that feeds it. Outfitters at the bridges rent boats and run shuttles
