Lake Butler

Union County · North Florida & First Coast

The county seat of Union County, a town of about two thousand people built around the lake it is named for.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Settlers platted the ground in 1859 and a post office opened in 1860, though the city was not formally incorporated until May 1893. The name comes from the lake, and the lake was named for Robert Butler, a United States Army colonel who served as acting governor of East Florida. The city covers about two and a half square miles, a small part of that water, and sits at 135 feet above sea level, which is high ground by Florida standards. The climate is humid subtropical. The city runs on a commission and manager form of government. The Union County School District operates four schools here: Lake Butler Elementary for prekindergarten through fourth grade, Lake Butler Middle for fifth through eighth, Union County High School for ninth through twelfth, and an adult education program. The Union County Courthouse stands downtown, and so does the Townsend-Green Building. The lake is the center of the town, with the city park on its shore and fishing, swimming and boating open to anyone who drives in. The population was 1,986 at the 2020 census
