Over 7,000 acres holding the largest freshwater marsh left in southeast Florida, running behind the coast from Fort Pierce to Jensen Beach.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The savannas are a basin marsh, a wet grassland lying in a shallow trough behind the coastal ridge, and this is the largest one left anywhere in southeast Florida. The park runs more than seven thousand acres along that trough between Fort Pierce and Jensen Beach, mostly open grassland with scattered South Florida slash pine standing in it. A plant called savannas mint grows here and nowhere else on earth. Nearly all the surviving fragrant prickly-apple, an endangered cactus, is inside this park. Florida scrub jays live here, along with gopher tortoises, sandhill cranes and alligators. About thirteen miles of public trail cross it, open to walkers, cyclists and horses, and canoe and kayak trips run on the water with the Friends of the Savannas. The Savannas Education Center has exhibits and guided walks. The main entrance is at 2541 Southeast Walton Road in Port St. Lucie, and the marsh is at its fullest after the summer rains
