GARDENS & LANDSCAPES

Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens

St. Lucie County · Atlantic Coast

Twenty-one acres of subtropical garden opened in 2010 and run by volunteers, with a two-acre lake at the middle of it.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The gardens opened in March 2010 and cover 21 acres, run by the Friends of the Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens, a nonprofit educational foundation, rather than by the city directly. That volunteer effort is most of why the place exists and most of why it recovered after storms knocked it about. The planting is laid out in separate rooms and islands: a bamboo garden, a bonsai collection, a bromeliad island, a butterfly garden, a faery garden built for children, a cactus and succulent island, a hibiscus garden, an orchid room, a palm walk, a rose garden, a serenity garden and a tropical fruit garden. A two-acre lake sits in the middle with paths around it. A pavilion of about 4,100 square feet and an amphitheater serve as a wedding and event venue, and a sales center sells saplings grown on site. An illuminated display runs through the holidays and costs nothing
