Palatka Historic District

Putnam County · North Florida & First Coast

Two National Register districts covering the old heart of Palatka, both listed on the same day in November 1983.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Palatka has two historic districts rather than one, and they were both added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 17, 1983. The South Historic District covers about 93 acres of residential streets, a neighborhood of late nineteenth and early twentieth century houses built when the town was a steamboat port and a winter resort on the St. Johns River. The North Historic District is smaller at 35 acres, bounded by the river, Bronson Street, North 1st, North 5th and Main, and it holds 76 contributing buildings. The Bronson-Mulholland House of 1854 and St. Mark's Episcopal Church both stand inside it. Palatka was a substantial place in the 1880s, with steamboats running the river and hotels filling each winter, and the two districts are what is left of that. The downtown between them carries a Florida Main Street program, a row of brick storefronts and more than thirty murals on the walls
