Dunns Creek State Park

Putnam County · North Florida & First Coast

Over 6,300 acres on the creek that drains Crescent Lake into the St. Johns River, fifteen miles south of Palatka.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Dunns Creek carries the water of Crescent Lake north into the St. Johns River, and the state park takes in 6,302 acres along it, about fifteen miles south of Palatka off US 17. The name comes from John Dunn, a lawyer and coffee planter granted land here in 1765. People were here long before that, and burial mounds remain on the property. In the early twentieth century this was a steamboat landing where citrus was loaded, and a post office besides, and the land has since been turpentined, logged, ranched and farmed. Florida added it to the state park system in October 2001. Beside it sits the Dunns Creek Conservation Area, another 6,302 acres bought by the St. Johns River Water Management District in 1992, and together they hold about five miles of shoreline and a large stretch of floodplain that stores water and keeps it clean. Trails run through pine flatwoods and hardwood swamp, and the creek takes boats and paddlers
