Crescent Lake

Putnam County · North Florida & First Coast

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Crescent Lake runs about thirteen miles north to south and roughly two miles across, covering 15,960 acres and curving the way its name suggests. It sits on the boundary between Putnam and Flagler counties in north central Florida, and drains north through Dunns Creek into the St. Johns River, which makes it part of that river's system rather than a separate basin. Steamboats worked this water in the nineteenth century, carrying citrus and passengers between the river and the settlements on the shore, and in December 2008 archaeologists from the Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program searched the eastern shoreline for the wreck of the steamboat Alligator. Crescent City sits on the western shore and takes its name from the lake. The water is shallow and dark and holds largemouth bass, crappie and bream, and boat ramps on both counties' shores give access
