WATER & COAST

Bayside Marketplace

Miami-Dade County · South Florida & the Keys

A waterfront shopping and eating complex at 401 Biscayne Boulevard, opened on April 8, 1987.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The Rouse Company of Columbia, Maryland built it for ninety-three million dollars to a design by Benjamin C. Thompson, as a festival marketplace meant to bring people back into a downtown they had stopped visiting. It worked: more than twelve million came in the first year. Two pavilions of two floors each give three hundred and seventy thousand square feet, with about two hundred and thirty-five thousand of that in shops and restaurants, and seventy-seven of the original businesses were minority owned. It sits on the bay beside the city marina, which is why most of the sightseeing boats and the bay cruises leave from here. The Skyviews Miami observation wheel opened on October 28, 2020, standing two hundred feet with forty-two air-conditioned gondolas. The place was renovated between 2016 and 2018 and the PIER 5 entertainment area was added in January 2024. Bayfront Park is next door. A flagship sweet shop of sixteen thousand square feet opened in April 2024 and a flagship taqueria in May 2026. Brookfield holds fifty-one parts of the ownership out of a hundred, with Ashkenazy Acquisition Corporation holding the rest and running the site
