FLORIDA PLACE TO EXPLORE
Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center
Martin County · Atlantic Coast
A marine science center and visitor attraction at 890 Northeast Ocean Boulevard on Hutchinson Island, Stuart.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
The centerpiece is the Gamefish Lagoon, a large saltwater enclosure holding native Florida species including sharks and the game fish the Treasure Coast is known for, with staff feeding them on a published schedule so visitors can see them working rather than drifting. A stingray touch exhibit lets children handle the animals under supervision, and there are resident sea turtles and a run of saltwater aquariums. The Ocean EcoCenter carries the indoor exhibits and the Waterworks Exploration Zone is a hands-on model of how water moves through Florida, from river to wetland to estuary, which is the local argument in miniature. Nature trails run through the coastal hammock outside. Behind the public side the society does seagrass and oyster restoration work in the Indian River Lagoon. Open Tuesday to Sunday from ten in the morning until four. Adult admission is twenty dollars, children from three to twelve are ten, and military rates are lower
