FLORIDA PLACE TO EXPLORE
Ocala Downtown Square
Marion County · Central Florida
The public square at Broadway Street and Magnolia Avenue, the center of Marion County since the town was laid out in the 1840s.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
A fire swept the business district in 1883 and took most of it. The town rebuilt in brick, and did it thoroughly enough that Ocala has been called Brick City ever since. Those late nineteenth century fronts still line Broadway and Magnolia, restored and occupied by shops and restaurants rather than left as a museum street, and the Marion County Courthouse closes the eastern side of the square. The market runs on Saturday mornings from eight until two with more than eighty stalls. On the first Friday of each month the galleries open late for an art walk with live music. Light Up Ocala fills the square at the start of the holiday season, and festivals use it through the year. More than fifteen restaurants and a run of independent shops sit within the few blocks around it, and street parking and public lots within a block or two are free
