LECOM Park

Manatee County · Gulf Coast

A ballpark built in 1923 at 1611 Ninth Street West in Bradenton, the oldest stadium still used for spring training.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Only Fenway Park of 1912 and Wrigley Field of 1914 are older among the grounds major league teams still play on. It was City Park to begin with, then Ninth Street Park, then Braves Field, and in 1962 it was named McKechnie Field for Bill McKechnie, the Hall of Fame manager who lived in Bradenton. The Pittsburgh Pirates have trained here every spring since 1969 and a lease signed in 2008 keeps them until 2037. In February 2017 the Pirates and the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine agreed the naming that gave it the present title. Capacity has gone from two thousand at the opening to six thousand six hundred and two after the 1993 rebuilding and eight thousand five hundred after the work done in 2013, and the renovations were handled so that the old covered grandstand feeling survived. The Bradenton Marauders, the Pirates' Single-A club in the Florida State League, play their home games here through the summer
